We run three 4x4 jeep tours in Madeira, and each one covers a different part of the island. There isn't a single "best" one - there's the one that fits the time you have and what you want to see. Here's the direct comparison.
São Cristóvão - half day, 4 hours
Our most-booked tour, 5 stars on GetYourGuide. Covers the central north coast - Serra de Água, the São Vicente caves, and the Ponta Delgada and São Cristóvão viewpoints - closing with a fresh poncha while the whole north coast stretches out below you.
Choose this if: you only have half a day free, you're travelling with kids, or you want a first taste of Madeira before deciding whether to come back for a full-day tour.
East Tour - full day, 8 hours
The deepest cross-section of the island's east side - Pico dos Barcelos, Eira do Serrado, Pico do Areeiro (with a walk on the PR1 trail), Ribeiro Frio, the traditional A-frame houses of Santana, and the Engenhos do Norte rum factory, finishing at Ponta de São Lourenço.
Choose this if: you want to walk a bit beyond the jeep, you enjoy mountain scenery, and you have the full day free.
Northwest Tour - full day, 8 hours
The postcard route, at the right pace - the Cabo Girão skywalk, São Vicente, the Água de Alto waterfall, the black-sand beach at Seixal, two hours of swimming in the Porto Moniz natural pools, and the centuries-old Fanal forest.
Choose this if: you want the combination of cliffs, waterfalls and water - and don't mind trading a hike for volcanic-pool time.
If you only have time for one
The most common question we get: "I only have one day, which do I pick?" If it's your first time in Madeira and you want the fullest single-day summary of the island, the Northwest Tour covers the widest range of landscapes (cliffs, water, forest). If you'd rather spend fewer hours on the road with a calmer close, São Cristóvão remains the most popular for good reason.
All tours include hotel pickup and drop-off, an air-conditioned 4x4 jeep, a professional local guide, and stops at every viewpoint described above. Licensed RNAAT 52/2026.
