The deepest cross-section of Madeira in eight hours
The East Tour is our most complete full-day route. You start high - Pico dos Barcelos, then Eira do Serrado - climb to Pico do Areeiro at 1818m, walk a short stretch of PR1, drop into the laurel forest of Ribeiro Frio for the PR11, stop for lunch in the A-frame village of Santana, taste rum at the Engenhos do Norte factory, and finish on the dramatic peninsula of Ponta de São Lourenço.
What you'll see
- Pico dos Barcelos (~25 min) - the first wide view of Funchal bay
- Eira do Serrado (~30 min) - the cliff edge overlooking Curral das Freiras
- Pico do Areeiro (~30 min) - 1818m, the start of PR1, short walk above the clouds
- Ribeiro Frio (~50 min) - PR11 levada walk through laurel forest
- Santana (~1h30) - the famous triangular A-frame houses, with time for lunch
- Engenhos do Norte (~25 min) - traditional rum factory, optional tasting
- Ponta de São Lourenço (~30 min) - the rocky eastern tip, dry-stone cliffs and ocean
Timing
Pickup at your hotel in the morning. Tour ends between 17:00 and 17:30. Total ~8 hours.
Format: 4x4 jeep, up to 7 passengers.

Good to know
- Pico do Areeiro is often 10-15°C cooler than Funchal - bring a layer
- Closed walking shoes recommended (PR1 + PR11 are short walks but stony)
- Suitable for ages 8+, OK for seniors at their own pace
